Project work for a landholder is exciting.  After the initial planning comes the application for funding and if all goes well, then the hard work begins.

Project work for NRM Facilitator, Peter Spence, is also exciting.  For each project that ‘gets up’ at Desert Channels Group (DCG), there is much work to be done: some of it time consuming and mundane, but then there is the getting out and about, talking with landholders, seeing the results of their innovative projects.

DCG is currently wrapping up 37 projects across 51 milllion hectares.  For each completed project there is an aquital which means for Peter, lots of paperwork, lots of kilometres and lots of days travelling.

This month alone, Peter has been from Praire to Quilpie and Windorah to Winton as he chips away at the long list of property visits to be completed by the end of August.

The 16 projects  still remaining to be acquitted, were given extensions till the end of August due to the wonderfully wet season we experienced in early 2011.  The majority of these acquittals are from the 2010 funding round with the most projects funded under the Australian Government’s Ground Cover and WONS funding rounds.

Peter, a former landholder himself, loves to see the results of the hard work and dedication of property managers. “I am impressed with the people I meet who do our projects,” he said.  “They really care about their land, are proud of what they’ve done and happy to show and talk about what’s going on.  Everyone I meet wants to leave their land in better shape than when they started.”
