LANDCARE CONFERENCE READY TO ROLL

What do landcarers, live snakes, a two metre helium balloon, musicians, story tellers, poets, a mobile office on 8 wheels, dinosaurs, and artists have in common? The 2009 State Landcare Conference is what they have in common and they’ll all be meeting in Longreach from the 15th to the 17th of October under the banner of Legends, Larrikins and Landcare.

The conference theme was chosen to showcase the west to visitors says Desert Channels Queensland CEO, Leanne Kohler. “Our region is unique, and I believe we go about our Landcare if a bit different,” she says, “but we are no less committed and no less passionate then our coastal cousins.

“DCQ has partnered with the Landcare groups of the region to host this conference and put together an intriguing programme that includes Murri Magic, Positive Partnerships, Landcare Leadership and Awesome Outback.”

“Delegates to the Legends, Larrikins and Landcare conference will not only see what make the region so special, they’ll meet some of our favourite legends and larrikins. The conference will also be an opportunity to make new friends, catch up with old ones, and get a better understanding of why we’re so passionate about our slice of Queensland.”

This conference will also be an opportunity for the regional Landcare groups (Aramac, Ilfracombe, Longreach, Upper Thompson, Towerhill and Torrens Creek, Upper Landsborough and Channel) and DCQ to showcase the many successful projects undertaken in the west as well as to highlight the challenges of Landcare in this country.

The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries’ 8 wheeler mobile office will be parked adjacent to the Civic Centre throughout the conference. This large and impressive office will be open for delegates and the public, and Fred McPhie will be on hand to answer questions about services and products, and to show visitors around.

Radical Reptiles will be set up in the Longreach Civic Centre Courtyard providing daily shows, explaining the reptiles of this region and allowing people to get up close and see what makes these creatures so unique.

Aboriginal musician, artist and story teller, Michael Connolly, will be working throughout the conference, sharing his love of his culture through paintings, music and yarning.

The “Dino Dinner” on Friday 16th October, with guest speaker, David Elliott from Australian Age of Dinosaurs – Winton, is open to the public. The public are also invited to help us farewell conference delegates, at the Wrap Up Party in Edkins Park, Longreach on Saturday 17th October.
