Learning about Weeds and Native Plants
DCQ’s Landcare Facilitator, Chris Rosin, continues his work throughout the Dessert Channels Region, conducting Weed Days and meeting with Junior Landcare groups in Muttaburra and Prairie.
Hosted by the Tower Hill Torrens Creek Landcare Group (Prairie) and the Upper Thomson Landcare Group (Muttaburra), the informative Weed Days were attended by 20 enthusiastic participants. Chris was assisted by Jenny Milson, (DEEDI Longreach) and John McKenzie, (Tropical Research Centre Charters Towers).
Chris shared information about the history of spray mister usage and its success in weed management in Western Queensland. “Showing slides of how the spray mister works, as well as before and after shots of prickly acacia spraying, created quite a deal of interest in this type of weed work,” commented Chris.
Jenny Milson’s session on plant identification of both toxic and non toxic plants as well as how to best use digital photography for the identification of plants was well received. John McKenzie’s ‘best prac’ talk included information on the types and usage of chemicals for maximum success with weed kill.
“The practical and hands-on nature of the days made this an enjoyable experience for all who attended,” reported Chris Rosin. “The feedback received from the graziers who attended was positive and I look forward to repeating these days at other Landcare groups in our region in the near future.”
Junior Landcare groups are also getting active in our region with the latest projects coming from Prairie and Muttaburra State Schools. Both schools will be shortly engaged in planting native trees throughout their towns. “It is very encouraging to see so many children involved in these projects. The children are our future and if we can instill in them environmental values, we can ensure a better tomorrow,” adds Chris.
