Our Current Projects
These are projects that Desert Channels Queensland runs, or is a partner in. They are major investments by governments and the community in sustainable natural resource management across the Desert Channels region.

Note: To augment existing projects and to fund new ones, we continue to apply to a variety of funding sources. We have applied for funding through the Regional Competitive Bid for Grazing Land Management, Cross-Catchments Weeds and Feral Animals Initiative, Climate Risk, Indigenous Natural Resource Management, and the National Landcare Program.

Protecting our Future (ongoing & Jan 06 - Jan 07) $300,000

Protecting our Future is an umbrella program providing funding to deliver integrated outcomes across planning, capacity building, and on-ground activities.  This project is a key investment for improving the ability of the community to manage, protect and restore (where necessary) the condition of the region’s assets: land, water, biodiversity and community.

Rangelands Network (formed 2004)

This is a network of Rangelands regional bodies, the Desert Knowledge Cooperative Research Centre, government departments and other interested organisations.  It is an information, knowledge sharing and support network that also looks at how the rangelands regional bodies, which have small populations, very limited resources and huge areas to look after, can combine forces on common issues.

WaterSmartTM (mid 05 - mid 08) - $795,000

The 3 year WaterSmartTM Project combines the best grazing management with the best technologies in stock water storage and delivery on pastoral properties to help to improve stock management, control total grazing pressure and ultimately improve the condition of pastoral country.  The essence of the project is to find the best way to sustainably manage stock over the normal wet and dry cycles across the pastoral lands and will develop property-wide water management systems that improve productivity.

Implementation of Regional Investment Strategy (Jul 04 – Jun 07) – $5,100,000

This Regional Investment Strategy (RIS) is based on the priorities identified in the Desert Channels Regional Natural Resource Management Plan and provides recommendations for natural resource management investment for the period 1 July 2004 to 30 June 2007.

The actions are grouped under natural resource assets (biodiversity, land, water, and community). This format is a reflection of the regional plan and presents the information clearly to the community. Capacity building, and monitoring and evaluation will also be key components of the RIS. The aim is to have each action providing multiple benefits across more than one asset, thus providing a highly integrated approach to natural resource management across the region.

Integrated Planning; On-ground Actions (Jan 06 – Jun 06) – $330,000

This project will use a mix of funding to roll our integrated planning into on-ground actions that, through partnerships with community and governments, promote sustainable natural resource management and address community identified issues.

Facilitator / Coordinator Transitional (Oct 04 – Mar 05) – $343,000

This project will support DCQ staff to continue on-ground works and maintain community engagement during the planning and investment strategy development phase.  This phase is a prerequisite to accessing funding from the second round of the Commonwealth Government’s Natural Heritage Trust.

Indigenous Statewide Network (Oct 04 – Oct 05) – $100,000

This project will support Indigenous engagement and integration into the regional process.  It will also assist Indigenous involvement in decision-making processes which will include better representation on the DCQ Board and the implementation group committees.

Advancing On-Ground Nature Conservation (Oct 03 – Dec 05) – $400,000

This project will encourage and deliver targeted on-ground nature conservation projects within the Desert Uplands Region by providing an incentive. Landholders will receive a subsidy for material involved in construction and monitoring of nature conservation projects.

Grazing Land Management (Jun 04 – Jun 05) – $841,000

This 3 year project aims to increase the adoption, by landholders, community groups and other natural resource managers, of sustainable practices in the extensive grazing areas of Queensland. This will be done by providing the networks, understanding, skills, and technical support required, thereby contributing to sustainable natural resource management and biodiversity conservation results.

Landcare Community Support (Jun 04 – Jun 05) – $360,000

Desert Channels Queensland (DCQ) On-Ground Landcare Support Project is designed to get Landcare Groups in the Desert Channels Region active again. This will be done through funding support for improved land management activities. Increased knowledge and understanding, and the adoption of best management practices will have a long term benefit for the Desert Channels Queensland region.

Cross Catchment Weeds and Feral Animals Initiative (Jun 04 – Jun 05) – $215,000

This project focuses on the protection and regeneration of biodiversity and production values within the DCQ region. It addresses the impacts of weeds and feral animals on these values, via direct on-ground work in strategic areas, and improving stakeholder ability to carry out effective pest control. A devolved grants component will be highly target-specific, focusing on the repair and protection of biodiversity values in endangered and of-concern regional ecosystems, listed wetlands / springs, and in controlling.

Indigenous Engagement (Apr 04 – Sep 04) – $20,722

The project involves the planning, conduct, and administration of a regional workshop for the purposes of developing a cooperative resource management agreement between Desert Channels Queensland Inc and the Desert Channels Indigenous community. This agreement is in relation to the management, use, development or conservation of soil, water and vegetation resources in the DCQ region.

The regional workshop will produce a Cooperative Resource Management Agreement (CRMA) between the Parties for the DCQ region. A further outcome of this project is that this CRMA will be used as a model in the development of CRMAs in other regions across Australia.

Envirofund (Round 1) – Rivercare (Jun 04 – Jun 05) – $26,909

Regeneration and revegetation of the Farrar's Creek. This involves approximately 14 km of fencing to divide Little Bullock Paddock on Connemara Station by fencing and establishing an off-stream water point. The fence will clearly separate different land systems, the mulga woodlands from the alluvial floodplains and Mitchell grass downs along the Farrar's Creek. This changed infrastructure will mean grazing pressure in all areas will be more effectively managed, but will particularly enable regeneration of native vegetation along the river floodplains and banks.

Foundation Funding (Oct 03 – Jun 04) – $500,000

The Foundation Funding project funds:

The region's requirements to develop a Regional Natural Resource Management Plan and Regional Investment Strategy (for accreditation);

The development of DCQ as a regional body while supporting the activity of its key implementation groups through the planning process and ultimate delivery of on-ground action.
